After the progressive community's
victory on the budget last week, embarrassed House Republican leaders have been scrambling to find the votes to pass the budget reconciliation bill. Yet after a week of wheeling, dealing, and cajoling,
they still don't have the votes to pass it. Your calls and e-mails are working--and we need more!
The House leadership has scheduled a new vote on the budget for today. We need progressives to flood Capitol Hill with calls to House members and urge them to oppose this budget. Our toll-free number is still up and running. Call your Representative, toll-free: 1-800-828-0498.
More after the jump.
Despite all the arm-twisting, House members who have grave concerns about what this budget would do to the most vulnerable Americans are holding strong. Most importantly, moderate Republicans are still opposing many of the provisions in the budget:
Still, the budget bill has run into fierce resistance from Republicans unhappy with limiting eligibility for food stamps, curbing student loan subsidies and requiring Medicaid beneficiaries to pay for a fraction of their health care.
``There is no question we are having a difficult time rounding up the votes,'' said GOP Rep. Jim Nussle of Iowa, chairman of the House Budget Committee.
We are very close to defeating this deeply flawed and immoral budget. Your calls could make all the difference!
